Authentic vs. Fake 1st Edition Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon Booster Box Scam Guide

DISCLAIMER:  This specific write-up does not include RESEALED fruadulent product vs. FACTORY SEALED untampered product. Instead, it is intended for readers to note the difference between real and fake LOB boxes.

When LOB came out in 2002, there were two box variants.  One box had “wavy” cards and the other had “glossy” cards (please refer to the database for more information on that specific topic).

Unfortunately and quite surprisingly, fake wavy LOB boxes (containing 24 fake packs filled with counterfeit cards inside) arrived to North America from China and contained some of the most convincing counterfeit TCG cards we have seen.  The quality of the fakes were quite impressive, especially given the fact that they allegedly arrived around the same time that the current product (LOB) was on the market.  Typically, counterfeit collectables aren’t produced until a product has had a proven track record of success.  While Yu-Gi-Oh did extremely well early on, it was astounding to see fake boxes, packs, and cards of this quality during the infancy of the Yu-Gi-Oh TCG.  Here is what you need to know regarding the fake packs and boxes:

1) Fake LOB boxes were only produced with the indicators of a wavy box variant.  Glossy LOB box variants will not run into this potential fake issue.

2) Real boxes have a nicely centered text “KONAMI” within the white box.  Fake boxes have a “KONAMI” logo that is slightly shifted to the right.

3) Real boxes have a “KONAMI” logo where the letters are spaced out evenly.  Fake boxes have a “KONAMI” logo where the “O” and “N” are intersecting, or touching one another.

In my opinion, inspecting the “KONAMI” white box and logo are the best way to tell the difference between wavy boxes that will contain real or fake cards and packs.  There are other ways to tell between real and fake wavy boxes (including inspecting the UDE entertainment symbol and feeling the plastic wrap). However, I believe this is the easiest and most effective universal way of telling the difference between the fraudulent and legitmate boxes.
